In 1968 Marcel Duchamp together with John Cage organised a game of chess, in which sensors were attached to a chessboard and tone sequences were released. As is the case in many other works of Cage & Duchamp, in some way the participants become the orchestra for the game.
Sound gains ever more significance within the most diverse areas of our society,
through the subliminal effect of certain tones and frequencies. Experiments in vacum
cleaner design utilise these types of sound too improve the vacum cleaning experience.
The basic idea behind this exhibition is the connection between certain artists and there use of sound.
In planning this exhibition we wanted to show the different artistic positions used by
artists to illustrate the use of sound in a variety of fields. The participating artists come from various practices including conceptual, minimal and performance.
Sound can generate space and space can generate sound.
In conjunction with the exhibition we have published a newspaper "version NR. 0" with texts by Ursula Maria Probst, Rainer Machné and Leonhard Fessler. Accompanying the newspaper are a number of commissioned CD / DVD editions.
